Papua New Guinea lost one of their early fine art masters in 2008 with the passing of Philip Yobale. He was part of the initial crop of Papua New Guineans who were introduced to the fine art tradition by the Beiers at the National Art Gallery.
Another key artist whose early original print work has been heavily collected by western art institutions, he developed into a sophisticated commentator on the social status of every day life around him. He regularly used political and social issues as the core of his work and delivered mesmerizing optical illusions through these subjects. This is a rare piece of this scale and reflects Yobale at the peak of his creative life.
Motherland will be returning to PNG, April 2010 after being on loan to Giles Peterson of the Whitecliffe College of Art & Design, Auckland, New Zealand.
