Larry Santana

Born in Banaro Village, Keram River Larry started his art training at Goroka Technical College and then completed his Diploma in Fine Arts at, what was then, The National Art School.  He went on to attain his Diploma in Teaching at the Divine Word University.

His primary income was for many years earnt as a graphic artist, both for himself and for various organisations around Port Moresby and Madang until he turned to teaching, looking for security for his family.

His original art was first celebrated with a solo exhibition at the Port Moresby Arts Centre in 1983 and 1986 saw his first opportunity to represent Papua New Guinea on the international stage with his work being exhibited as part of the ACP Head of State Meeting in Brussels, Germany.  In 1988 he represented PNG at the 3rd South Pacific Festival of Arts and the following year Larry travelled to the USA as guest artist at the Bridgewater State College, Boston.

The passion of the German and American markets for Larry's work has continued consistently and Larry returned to Germany to exhibit at the Museum Fur Volkerkunde, Frankfurt in 1997 and presented at Pine Manor Exhibition 'Nation Making and Cultural Tensions, Contemporary Art of Papau New Guinea', held in Boston, USA.  the University of California in 2006.  His most recent appearance was by invitation at the East West Centre in Hawai'i.

Larry continues to teach at the University of Goroka.

'During my 27 year working career, I have gained invaluable experience serving various major clients for my employers in all disciplines in art from concept design to finished products as a graphic artist and as a professional fine artist making and promoting Papua New Guinean art and culture abroad.

Working with World Vision International has created a new dimension in my life working as adult literacy project manager in serving the illiterate population in some of it's literacy programs.  I have come to believe that if all women are literate, then whole communities can change for the better.'
